Nassau County Application Guide

The current Nassau County pistol license process: apply online, interview and fingerprints, then pickup.

Last checked November 1, 2026 · 6 sections

Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) now takes new pistol license applications online. This guide follows the current official steps and adds tips from a 2A613 member who went through the earlier handwritten process. Details from that member are labeled as experience, not official rules.

A Nassau County license is good for the whole State of New York except New York City. To carry in NYC you need to apply to the NYPD separately.

Updated Oct 28, 2026 from the official NCPD page: Nassau County Police pistol licenses page and the application portal Nassau County pistol permit portal.

Step 1: Read the Handbook

Read the Pistol License Handbook completely before you apply, so you understand the rules for each type of license.

Pistol License Handbook (PDF)

The application fee is $200 (Handbook, Chapter 1.F). There is also an $87 fingerprint fee (NYS DCJS), paid by check or money order only (Handbook; Application Package, Step 3).

Step 2: Apply Online

  1. Open the portal: Nassau County pistol permit portal (new licenses only, not renewals).

  2. Create an account if this is your first time.

  3. Complete the application. You will upload documents such as your driver's license, a major utility bill, and a birth certificate or valid passport.

  4. Review everything for accuracy.

  5. Choose an interview and fingerprint appointment.

  6. Pay the application fee. Payment is required before the application can be submitted.

Step 3: Statements, References and Training

The portal tells you which documents it needs. From the earlier process, a member reported the following. Confirm each item in the Handbook and the portal before relying on it:

  • A notarized statement covering your history (hospital admissions, certain convictions in the last five years, and who lives with you). A sample from that process is below.

  • 4 notarized reference affidavits.

  • Your 18-hour NYS concealed carry class certificate. The member took the class before the fingerprint appointment so the certificate was ready.

Sample Notarized Statement

Sample from the earlier process. Check that the current portal still asks for it.

After You Apply

  • NCPD emails you when your license is ready to pick up in person. (Member experience.)

  • If you want to buy or own a semi-automatic rifle, ask for the Semi-Automatic Rifle License too. It is not needed for shotguns or for bolt, lever or pump-action rifles (NYS Gun Safety). It is a separate card with a blue top. (Member experience.)

  • To buy a firearm after approval, choose it at a local gun store and complete the background check there. Then take the receipt to the pistol section in Mineola to get an amended license with the serial number. (Member experience: $10 per amendment. Confirm the current amendment fee.) Then pick up the firearm.
